Chongqing University of Technology is a public research university located in Chongqing, a municipality directly under the central government and a national central city in southwestern China, with a population exceeding 31 million as of 2025. The university was founded on 18 September 1940 as Shiji Public School by ordnance expert Li Chenggan (李承干). In the 2025 Best Chinese Universities Ranking, the university was ranked 5th among institutions in Chongqing and within the top 200 nationally out of 3,167 universities and colleges in China. In 2022, Chongqing University of Technology was ranked in the top 2000 universities in the world by several international rankings including the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Ranking, the URAP World Ranking – University Ranking by Academic Performance and the Scimago Institutions Rankings. It has three disciplines—Engineering, Materials Science, and Chemistry—that rank within the top 1% worldwide according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI).
